The aim of the competition cottage
The competition is sponsored by Mole Valley Farmers and organised by CPRE. The object of the competition is to encourage villages to harness their sense of community into keeping each village clean, well cared for and environmentally friendly. (Details on entry form)

CPRE has organised the Best Kept Village Competition for 38 years. It is an immensely popular competition and easy to enter. All we are asking is whether a village is doing the best for itself given what it has. Please see our entry form in order to see the criteria upon which the judges award marks.

2008 is another exciting year when Devon CPRE and MVF work together towards the success of the competition. As well as funding the running of Best Kept Village Competition, MVF is providing a prize of £100 of MVF tokens for each winner in the 4 categories of entry.

The 4 Categories are:

Past Winners
Small Villages
Large Villages
New Entries

Devon CPRE in an initiative to involve the next generation in its work has, since 2004, invited children of primary school age to enter the Map Competition. These maps are designed to help the judges in their difficult task of looking in detail around each village. In 2006 both Ugborough and Shaldon Schools won the Map Competition and each received a £50 Book Token for the school library. Christow, Dolton and Stoke Fleming Schools were highly commended.

Our team of over 45 judges have a Workshop Day each year before judging begins. This was held on 5th April 2008 at Filleigh Village Hall in North Devon. Some of our judges have been part of the team for many years and are able to give extremely helpful advice to new judges. Judging is taken very seriously indeed and some sets of judges actually stay in a village overnight in order to get the feel of the village being judged!

The villages are judged in 3 rounds in May, June with the final round in July/August. The results are announced in August. During the autumn we celebrate with the winning villages and schools at their presentations. These are always happy and memorable occasions.
